Businesses owners, people in tourism, hospitality and the arts industries are thrilled to have uMngeni Tourism finally establishing itself.

Hundreds of people gathered at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site outside Howick on Wednesday to celebrate uMngeni Tourism and to view their official campaign video and the launch of their website. Its chairperson, JP Prinsloo, said the past 14 months of uMngeni Tourism had been a journey of introspection and reflection to truly understand their purpose as the official community tourism organisation of uMngeni.

Prinsloo said: 

“Our vision of delivering curated tourism experiences based on the specific needs, interests and preferences of our tourists is now achievable.”

He added they will strive to become the central point of contact for all tourism related activities and experiences in the Midlands, stretching from Nottingham Road to Hilton and from the Karkloof to Mpophomeni.

“uMngeni Tourism’s new web-based interactive portal asserts the principle that the Midlands has something for everyone, whether you are an adrenaline junkie, an avid birder, a local history enthusiast, or a keen restaurateur, there is a Midlands route waiting for you and uMngeni Tourism has you covered,” Prinsloo said.

Frank Mchunu of the Zulu Mpophomeni Tourism Experience, said they were hoping to see more tourists.

Mchunu said:

“We are happy to see our mayor supporting this because it gives us hope that we will get funding and the support we’ve always needed.”

He added that being part of the uMngeni Tourism meant there would be no competition from other organisations and that tourists will get a chance to enjoy various attractions in uMngeni.

Crafters from the Howick Falls were also excited to be part of uMngeni Tourism. Sam Fasteni said they have been seeing more people visiting the Howick Falls, which has boosted their business.

“With uMngeni Tourism, we are hoping there will be investments as well that will attract a lot of people to the Howick,” Fasteni said.

uMngeni mayor, Chris Pappas said as the new administration they are focused and determined to invest in tourism and agriculture as the primary pillars of local economy. “Invest in local, support local, hire local and travel local. uMngeni Tourism is ready and waiting for your support,” said Pappas.
